The Heritage Foundation is looking for photographs for use in our 2024 calendar which is distributed to more than half a million Heritage members and supporters in celebration of our beautiful country.

In our 2024 calendar, we want to show pictures that tell the story of what we love about America . . . the stories of the cities and towns and the countryside where we live, and that make us the people we are.

A few guidelines for your photo submission

  • Your photo should be an original work that you have taken yourself that illustrates the beauty of America
  • If your photo includes any people, you’ll need to include signed releases for each of them (sign a copy of the release here)
  • Submissions should be at a minimum resolution of 3450 x 2700 pixels, and should be in JPEG or TIFF format
  • You can submit up to five photos

Heritage will choose the photos for inclusion in the 2024 calendar. Winners will be notified that their photos have been selected this fall, after the calendar has been finalized.

Photo Contest Official Rules

Sponsor and Administrator: Heritage Foundation (Foundation), 214 Massachusetts Ave, NE, Washington, DC 20002-4999. (202) 546-4400.

By entering any portion of The Heritage Foundation 2024 Calendar Photo Contest (the “Contest”), all Entrants, including the Winners, acknowledge and agree to these Official Rules.

  1. Eligibility 
    1. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. The contest is open to Heritage Foundation members and supporters, except employees of Heritage Foundation and the immediate families of such employees. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older at time of entry. Entrants who are not the legal age of majority in their state (e.g., under 19 years of age in Alabama and Nebraska, under 21 years of age in Mississippi) must submit a completed Parental Consent Form that is signed by the Entrant’s or Winner’s parent or legal guardian. Entries submitted by minors without a fully completed parental consent form will be disqualified. All entrants must be legal residents of the United States. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply.
    2. The Heritage Foundation retains the ultimate decision, in its sole discretion, as to which Entrants are eligible. The Heritage Foundation’s failure to enforce any term of these Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that term.
  2. Winning Entries
    1. The winning photos will be printed throughout The Heritage Foundation’s 2024 calendar and on its cover with credit to the Winner. Photos that are not selected for the calendar may be used in support of The Heritage Foundation’s mission, in The Heritage Foundation communications, publications, and promotions, including but not limited to, stories, web pages, emails, and the like. No winners may be declared if judges determine that the photos submitted do not meet the criteria for publication in the calendar. Entrants, including the Winners, acknowledge that this prize has no monetary value.
  3. Entries
    1. Each Entry shall consist of photo and a written application, each subject to the requirements set forth in these Rules.
    2. All Entries must be received by The Heritage Foundation by May 18, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. The Contest period will run from April 15, 2023, at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time to May 18, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. The Heritage Foundation reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control or if enough submissions are not received. Notice of any extended deadline will be published on The Heritage Foundation’s website.
    3. To enter the Contest, Entrant must submit Entry that includes a photo of a person, scene, or landscape that represents what is best about America. Acceptable file formats include JPEG and TIFF, with a resolution of 3450 x 2700 pixels. Limit five (5) entries per person. Odds of winning will depend on the number of photos selected for the 2024 Calendar and on the number of eligible Entries received.
    4. All photos must be submitted through the online form. Photo titles must contain the applicant’s name in order to be considered for the Contest. Photos or other materials submitted through an alternate delivery method may not be accepted as entries into The Contest.
    5. For submissions containing human subjects, all Entrants must obtain the subject’s signed release using the Release form available for download on the contest entry web site. All Entrants must provide copies of the signed Releases to The Heritage Foundation.
    6. Entrant acknowledges and agrees that Entry will meet the following requirements:
      1. The photo must be original and created by the Entrant;
      2. The application must be truthful and accurate in all respects;
      3. Neither the photo nor the application shall contain any copyrighted material, trademark, service mark, patent, or any content protected by trade secret or confidentiality obligation or otherwise subject to third party proprietary rights or owned by any third party (including without limitation, any artwork, photograph, image, text, copy, or name), including material or content that invades any privacy or publicity rights of any third party, as determined within the sole discretion of The Heritage Foundation, unless Entrant is the owner of such materials or content of the Entrant has express prior permission from their rightful owner to use such materials or content in the manner set forth herein;
      4. Neither the photo nor the application shall contain any information or material that is defamatory, slanderous, threatening, inflammatory, libelous, or portrays any person or entity in a false light;
      5. Neither the photo nor the application shall contain profanity, offensive language, nudity, commercial appeals or other objectionable or irrelevant content, the determination of which is solely in the discretion of The Heritage Foundation; and
      6. Entry must not be illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft, as determined in the sole discretion of The Heritage Foundation.
    7. Any Entry that does not satisfy all requirements of these Official rules will be disqualified. The Heritage Foundation may, in its sole discretion, remove, delete and/or disqualify any entries or any Entrant for any reason or no reason.
  4. Judging and Selection of the Winner
    1. Judging will take place in two separate rounds. In one round, a panel of Heritage Foundation staff will select several photos from the Eligible Entries received based on originality and creativity in how the subject of the photo represents what is best about America. The Heritage Foundation will use these Winning Photos throughout its 2024 calendar.
    2. In the other round, a panel of Heritage Foundation staff will select four (4) based on suitability as a potential cover image, as well as originality and creativity in how the subject of the photo represents what is best about America, and then ask Members to vote on which one would make the best cover image for the 2024 calendar. The Entrant whose photo receives the most votes in this round will be a Winner.
    3. The Winners will be notified by e-mail and/or phone no later than September 30, 2023. Details of the Winners will be available for at least ninety (90) days after the above notification date by contacting The Heritage Foundation at (202) 546-4400. Each Winner agrees to have his/her name published as a Winner of the Contest.
  5. License
    1. Except where prohibited by law, upon submitting any Entry, the Entrant, including the Winners, grants The Heritage Foundation, its directors, officers, employers, and its agents the unconditional, unlimited, irrevocable, perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive, transferable right and license to publish, display, broadcast, reproduce, use, sublicense (through multiple tiers), adapt, edit and/or modify, adjust, abridge, condense, and/or excerpt and create derivative works from their photograph, photo images, likeness, name and biographical data as submitted in the Entry, without limitation and for any purpose (including commercial purposes, advertising, publicity, fundraising, promotion and sales), and without consideration to the Entrant and without further consent, compensation or approval, whether or not such contest materials are selected as a winning entry, along with the right of attribution. Entrant agrees that all right, title and interest, including the copyrights, in and to any and all derivative works of the Entry created by The Heritage Foundation shall be owned exclusively by The Heritage Foundation.
  6. Third Party Permissions
    1. Entrant warrants that he or she has obtained all of the rights, licenses, permissions, or consents in writing from any person (or parent/legal guardian if person is a minor) who may have helped create or who may appear in the Entry and for any material or elements that are not owned by the Entrant, and/or which are subject to the rights of third parties prior to the submission of the Entry.
    2. Entrant agrees to indemnify and hold harmless The Heritage Foundation, its directors, officers, employees, and agents from any and all liabilities, claims, demands, actions or causes of action, for loss, harm, damage, injury, cost or expense alleging that The Heritage Foundation’s use of an Entry violated a third party’s copyright, publicity rights, or that said use was defamatory or constituted an invasion of privacy.
    3. If an Entrant submits an Entry on behalf of a third party (an individual other than the Entrant), in order for the Entry to be eligible under these Rules, the third party must agree to the License set forth in these Rules to the same extent as an Entrant.
  7. Transmission and Technical Issues
    1. Whether it occurs in the preparation of an Entry, an attempt to submit an Entry, submission of an Entry, receipt of an Entry, selecting the Winners, or announcing the Winners, The Heritage Foundation shall not be responsible or liable for any and all:
      1. Lost, late, misdirected, incomplete, illegible Entries;
      2. Errors, omissions, interruptions, deletions, defects, delays in communication, operation or transmission, non-delivery, theft or destruction or any other malfunction that is technical or related to computer, telephone, cable, network, satellite, electronic or internal hardware of software, connections, or availability, lost or unavailable network connections, or unauthorized human intervention/access to a computer system, whether caused by the sender or by any of the equipment or programming associated with, or utilized in entering or conducting the Contest;
      3. Incorrect or inaccurate capture of Entry information, Entry, or other information, or the failure to capture any such Entry or information;
      4. Damage caused by computer virus or otherwise, to any computer resulting from Entrant’s access to The Heritage Foundation’s website or participation in the Contest;
      5. Incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by website users, tampering, hacking, or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest or unauthorized access to the website;
      6. Printing, typographical, tabulation, or human error, or unauthorized human intervention, including these Rules and in any written materials related to this Contest or the announcement of the Winner;
      7. Late, lost, misdirected, undeliverable, damaged or stolen mail;
      8. Any and all Internet access and usage charges that an Entrant may incur in the course of this Contest;
      9. Any injury or damage to any Entrant’s or any other person’s computer or phone related to or resulting from participating in this Contest or downloading materials from or use of The Heritage Foundation website; and
      10. Any unauthorized third party use of any Entry.
    2. Persons found tampering with any aspect of this Contest or Entry process, or whom The Heritage Foundation believes, in its sole discretion, to be causing malfunction, error, disruption or damage, or acting with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person, will be disqualified.
    3. Any use of robotic, automatic, macro, programmed or similar Entry or registration methods or voting methods will void all such entries by such methods, and disqualify from the Contest any Entrant using such methods.
  8. Modification or Cancellation
    1. The Contest and these Contest Rules are subject to cancellation, termination, modification, limitation, or suspension in The Heritage Foundation’s sole discretion, with or without notice, including to persons who have already entered the Contest. All cancellations, terminations, modifications, limitations, or suspensions of the Contest or Contest Rules will be posted on The Heritage Foundation’s website. For the avoidance of doubt, these rights extend to circumstances in which The Heritage Foundation, at its sole discretion and for any reason, determines that the Contest cannot be conducted as planned by reason of infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, acts of God, or any other causes which may corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Contest. If, in those circumstances, The Heritage Foundation terminates the Contest, it reserves the right to select the Winners from among all eligible Entries received as of the date of termination or as otherwise may be deemed fair and equitable by The Heritage Foundation.
  9. LIMITATION ON LIABILITY
    1. IN NO EVENT WILL THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION BE RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR ANY LOSSES OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF ANY ACCESS TO OR USE OF THE WEBSITE OR THE DOWNLOADING FROM, UPLOADING TO, AND/OR PRINTING MATERIAL DOWNLOADED FROM THE WEBSITE. WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, EVERYTHING ON THE WEBSITE IS PROVIDED “AS-IS, WHERE-IS, WITH ALL FAULTS”; WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND WITH NO GUARANTEE THAT THE WEBSITE WILL BE ERROR FREE OR THAT ANY ERRORS WILL BE CORRECTED. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW OR MAY LIMIT THE LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OR EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. CHECK YOUR LOCAL LAWS FOR ANY RESTRICTIONS OR LIMITATIONS REGARDING THESE LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSIONS. ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT OR OTHER PERSON TO DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE ASSOCIATED WITH THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION OR ITS AGENTS OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE PROGRAM IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIIL LAW, AND FOUNDATION AND ITS AGENTS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH PERSON TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.
  10. Indemnification and Release
    1. Each Entrant, including the Winners, agrees to indemnify, release, and hold harmless The Heritage Foundation, its directors, officers, employees, and agents from any and all liabilities, claims, demands, actions or causes of action, for loss, harm, damage, injury, cost or expense whatsoever including without limitation, property damage and personal injury (including emotional distress) which may occur in connection with participation in , the Contest, and for any claims or causes of action based on publicity rights, defamation or invasion of privacy. If this release is prohibited in any part by applicable law, Entrant hereby waives the right to seek or accept damages in any proceeding and to reimburse The Heritage Foundation for any and all expenses or costs associated with such claim (including attorney’s fees, court fees and the amount of any judgment or settlement).
  11. Choice of Law
    1. Except where prohibited, all issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Rules, or the rights and obligations of entrants or Heritage Foundation in connection with the Contest, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the District of Columbia without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules. Any dispute relating to the Contest shall be brought in the appropriate state or federal court having jurisdiction over the subject matter located in the District of Columbia. Entrants hereby irrevocably consent to the personal jurisdiction of said courts and waive any claim of inconvenient forum or lack of personal jurisdiction that they may have.

DISCLOSURES

When selecting a recurring donation, The Heritage Foundation will process this donation every month on the day of the month that you set up the recurring gift in the amount that you specify using the method of payment that you identified. You can cancel or change this donation at any time by contacting us at 1-800-546-2843. This authorization shall remain in effect until you notify The Heritage Foundation and Heritage has had reasonable time to act on it. A record of each debit will appear on your bank statement. You have the right to instruct your bank to reverse any and all debits.
